Bible Verses On Stress

At some point we all deal with stress. It may be a situation that causes us stress or it may be someone who causes us stress. Whatever the source of stress, the solution to stress is in the Bible. One of the ways the Bible is the solution to stress is in the many biographical stories we find in the Bible.

The Bible verses on stress specifically addresses worry that represents a lack of trust in God. God’s design for anxiety was that it would be a “short-lived” response to a threat. Anxiety becomes problematic when it is not related to realistic fears, becomes a chronic pattern when it interferes with normal body functioning. Here are 34 bible verses on stress to help combat it.

WHAT IS STRESS?

A Webster:

  1. “Strain, pressure. Force exerted upon the body that tends to strain or deform its shape.
  2. Urgency, importance.
  3. Tension, strained exertion: as the stress of war.”

Stress is the result of demands made upon the body. Events or experiences cause mental tension or when our bodies strain to function normally. Stress is reflected as accelerated heartbeat, a rise in blood pressure, headache or other localized pain, cramped muscles or skin eruptions. It can also affect one’s ability to think or behave rationally or appropriately. When mental or emotional stress results in changes in the body’s normal physiological pattern or functions the condition is frequently described as psychosomatic in origin (psyche: mind . . . soma/somatic: body.”

In simple terms stress is the wear and tear of life.  Some stress can be good for us. The key, however, is in how we adjust to it, and in its duration. It is long term stress that may kill us. The damage comes when the adrenal flow is too long.

Prolonged stress can create disease and emotional problems. Short-term stress is a normal function which is normally handled by glands and organs without any problem. In essence, stress can be considered anything that tends to change the control that one would ordinarily have over their body and emotions.

Bible Verses On Stress: Fear

25 “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” Psalm 56:3

26 Matthew 6:25-34 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?

So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

27 ” Luke 12:24-34 “Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest? Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin.

Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith! And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

28 Psalm 4:8 – “I will both lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, LORD, make me live in safety.”

29 Psalm 119:97 – “How I love Your teaching! It is my meditation all day long.”

30 Psalm 147:143 – “Trouble and distress have overtaken me, but Your commands are my delight.”

31 Jesus, in the midst of busy activities, said to His apostles: “He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a remote place and rest a while.” For many people were coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.” Mark 6:31
